Academic Rigor – IB & AP

When reviewing applicants' high school transcripts, college admissions officers look for two main traits: a course load that shows academic rigor and a GPA that demonstrates academic mastery.

IB Curriculum

IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Program

1. Theory of Knowledge (reflection)
2. Extended Essay (4,000-word essay)
3. Creativity, Activity, Service (project-based learning)

Students choose courses from the following subject groups:

• Studies in language and literature
• Language acquisition
• Individuals and societies
• Sciences
• Mathematics
• The arts

Students may opt to study an additional science, individuals and societies, or languages course instead of a course in the arts.

Students will take some subjects at higher level (HL) and some at standard level (SL).
HL and SL courses differ in scope but are measured according to the same grade descriptors, with students expected to demonstrate a greater body of knowledge, understanding and skills at higher level.
Each student takes at least three max four) subjects at HL, and the remaining at SL.
Standard level subjects take up 150 teaching hours. Higher level comprises 240 teaching hours.

AP Curriculum

AP (Advanced Placement) - governed by College Board

A set of college-level high school courses students can take in hopes of gaining college credit.

Students take a course that has been approved through a process called an “AP audit”.
They take their AP test during the first two weeks of May, and students receive their scores in the beginning of July.
